BACKGROUND NOTE

 

In 1938, Chull lost his father and used the inheritance money from his landowning family to set up a trucking company in Daegu to transport fish, vegetables, and fruit in the Korean peninsula. He named the enterprise Samsung, meaning three stars. The company soon grew and expanded into Seoul in 1947. Chull eventually expanded Samsung into textiles and built the largest woollen mill in Korea. Samsung entered the electronics industry in 1969 and set up several electronics divisions including Samsung Devices, Samsung Electro-Mechanics, Samsung Corning, and Samsung Semiconductor & Telecommunications. Samsung built its initial facilities in Suwon, South Korea, where it started producing black and white television sets. ..
